The X16550 UART Controller implements the hardware and software functionality of the National Semiconductor 16550 UART. The X16550 UART Controller performs parallel-to-serial conversion on characters received from the CPU and serial-to-parallel conversion on characters received from a modem or microprocessor peripheral. The device can be configured and its status monitored via the internal register set. The UART implements all standard serial interface protocols. The OPB interface allows designers to use this UART to interface with the On-Chip Peripheral Bus (part of IBM CoreConnect Bus Technology) which is part of the embedded system. Certain features of the embedded system can be tailored uniquely by parameterizing features of the OPB 16550 UART design. This allows the user to design a system using only the resources required by the application.
