PATHWAYS DEVELOPMENT GROUP DEVELOPS VIDEO GAME INTERFACE FOR
PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES USING XILINX SPARTAN-II FPGAS
Spartan-II flexibility enables Team Xtreme® for N64®
game controller
SAN JOSE, Calif., April 4, 2002 -Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX)
announced today that Pathways Development Group, Inc., http://www.pathwaysdg.com,
a developer of electronic products for people with disabilities,
chose Xilinx Spartan-II FPGAs for its Team Xtreme® for N64®
video game interface. The interface adapts a standard off-the-shelf
Nintendo N64 game system, enabling people with disabilities to
enjoy any Nintendo N64 video game, full speed, with family and
friends. A teammate can assist the player using a standard Nintendo
game controller that also attaches to Team Xtreme. Players can
opt to be their own Teammate, using a modified Teammate controller
along with head switches or foot switches to play completely unassisted
through Team Xtreme. The Spartan-II FPGA provides all the interfacing,
timing, display driving, command and data handling between the
Nintendo N64 game system, the player's switch inputs, and the
teammate's game controller.
"Spartan-II FPGAs offered the best overall solution for our
design," said Mike Andrews, founder and president of Pathways
Development Group. "The advanced system features of Spartan-II
FPGAs combined with excellent design tools and great technical
support were key factors in our selection of this part."
"The Team Xtreme for N64 controller demonstrates the flexibility
of the Spartan-II solution," said Xilinx vice-president of
marketing Sandeep Vij. "This application is a prime example
of how Xilinx FPGAs enable development of a whole new class of
cost-sensitive consumer products requiring very short development
times."
About Spartan-II FPGAs
The Xilinx Spartan-II FPGA series was created to offer a cost-optimized
system logic solution by providing the advantages of fast development-to-production
time, advanced system features, and in-system reprogrammability
at competitive prices. Spartan-II FPGAs provide total cost management
through the design, production, and life cycle phases, allowing
manufacturers to address all aspects of a product's cost. Design
cost is reduced through utilizing fewer engineering resources
and the elimination of non-recurring engineering (NRE) charges.
