FROM XILINX TO ENSURE FLEXIBLE METRO
AREA NETWORK SOLUTIONS
Use of Xilinx Virtex-II Pro FPGAs provides Luminous with
a competitive advantage
by enabling remote hardware evolution
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 29, 2002 - Xilinx Inc.,
(NASDAQ:XLNX) announced today that Luminous Networks, a leading
optical networking company, has selected Xilinx® Virtex-II
Pro™ FPGAs for use in its PacketWave™ family of metro area access
switches. Luminous Networks applies the reprogrammable nature
of Xilinx FPGAs to upgrade its metro area networking hardware
even after installation in the field.
"This FPGA-based approach assures Luminous fast
time-to-market, so we can capitalize on the expanding metro
area network market today," said Charles Barry, chief technology
officer at Luminous Networks. "Using Xilinx FPGAs provides the
combination of performance and flexibility demanded by metro
area network service providers."
Luminous Networks is among a growing number of
companies utilizing Xilinx FPGAs to gain a competitive advantage
in Metro Area Networking. The PacketWave optical networking
solutions deliver a new level of reliability and performance
for both toll-quality voice and Ethernet data services for Metropolitan
Area Network (MAN) service providers.
"Luminous Networks is well positioned with its
latest line of Metropolitan Area Network products, providing
carrier-class Resilient Packet Ring-based solutions for MAN
service providers," said Robert Bielby, senior director of Strategic
Solutions Marketing at Xilinx, Inc. "Xilinx FPGAs enhance Luminous
metro switches with a combination of high-speed, programmable
flexibility, high-density, flexible I/Os, and a wide range of
IP cores."
About PacketWave Solutions
Luminous Networks PacketWave is the industry's first carrier-class
optical Ethernet platform for Metropolitan Area Networks. This
packet-switched platform provides full support for legacy voice
and circuit TDM services, while delivering a range of new Ethernet
data and video services. PacketWave is based on Resilient Packet
Transport™ technology, a superset of the emerging Resilient
Packet Ring (RPR) protocol being standardized in the IEEE 802.17
working group. Luminous' PacketWave platform can be Stratum
timed from a master BITS or GPS clock to provide truly synchronous
TDM services, end-to-end.

About the Xilinx Metro-Optical Networking Forum
On July 25, 2002 in Santa Clara, Calif., Xilinx, along with
other industry leaders, is hosting a free one-day event that
will address the challenges of designing and developing products
for metro area and edge access networks. Attendees of the Metro
Optical Networking event will hear from industry experts on
where this dynamic market is headed, technologies driving success
in the MAN space, and see forward thinking solutions developed
by cutting-edge companies. Charles Barry CTO at Luminous Networks
will be presenting on 10Gb Ethernet vs. SONET from an RPR perspective.
