FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

XILINX COOLRUNNER-II CHIPS ENABLE LIFE-SAVING RESCUE SYSTEMS
Low Power CPLDs provide an ideal programmable platform for Girsberger Elektronik's portable avalanche rescue beacon

SAN JOSE, Calif., and BOSTON, Mass., January 29September 16, 2003 - At the Embedded Systems Conference today (ESC), Xilinx, Inc., (NASDAQ:XLNX announced that Swiss company Girsberger Elektronik AG, a leading provider of portable emergency transponders, used the industry's lowest power CPLD family, Xilinx CoolRunner -II RealDigital CPLDs, in its latest generation of Barryvox avalanche beacons and Autocall emergency relays. Girsberger products will be on display in the Xilinx booth #409 at ESC in Boston, September 16 - 18, 2003.

A Barryvox avalanche beacon is a small transportable unit, which transmits a radio signal. It is worn by outdoor enthusiasts to help in their relocation, should they become trapped underneath an avalanche. The Barryvox also has a receive mode, to receive radio signals from the beacons of snow-buried people, and help in their rescue.

Over 100,000 Barryvox beacons are in use worldwide by search and rescue teams, ski patrols, the military and private individuals. The battery efficient device allows 200 transmit- and 25 search hours, even in extreme temperatures of -30 degrees Celsius. Girsberger also produces consoles and especially modified transmitters for training purposes.

Autocall is a system that automatically sends a message (email, fax, SMS) via an integrated mobile phone (GSM) if a protected vehicle has been stolen. Using Global Positioning System satellite technology, it is possible to relocate a stolen vehicle to within a 120-meter range of accuracy. Both products incorporate Xilinx CoolRunner-II programmable chips.

"Xilinx programmable chips provided the ideal platform to design our rescue systems," said Felix Meier, Senior Engineer at Girsberger Elektronik. "We needed leading edge technology that combined low power with low cost and Xilinx delivered."

"Girsberger's portable search and rescue products demonstrate the diversity of applications using our CoolRunner-II RealDigital CPLDs," said Sandeep Vij, vice president of Worldwide Marketing at Xilinx. "Girsberger has provided an ideal situation in which we can work together to develop products that can actually make a significant contribution in saving lives."

Xilinx CoolRunner-II CPLDs offer the lowest power consumption, highest I/O count per macrocell, and smallest packaging in the industry and are cost optimized to address the pricing pressure of products designed for a broad spectrum of applications.
