NAUTICUS NETWORKS SELECTS XILINX PLATFORM FPGAs
FOR RAPID DEPLOYMENT OF NEW INTELLIGENT DATA CENTER
Nauticus develops adaptable IT infrastructure enterprise solution using
Xilinx reprogrammable FPGAs
SAN JOSE, Calif., April 28, 2003 - Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX) today announced
that Nauticus Networks (www.nauticusnet.com), a leading developer of intelligent
data center switches, selected the Xilinx Virtex-II Platform FPGA family
for its recently launched N2000 Series of Intelligent Data Center Switches.
Nauticus Network's N2000 and N2000V Series of Intelligent Data Center
Switches provide high performance network and security application services
while dramatically reducing capital and operating expenses. Nauticus is
among a growing number of data center solution providers to use the advanced
features and cost advantages of Xilinx Platform FPGAs to gain a competitive
advantage. Xilinx FPGAs provide a clear advantage over fixed ASIC technology
by providing faster time-to-market, multiple design iterations, and the
ability to upgrade equipment even after deployment in the field.
"The engineering staff at Nauticus researched all available logic
options, as well as traditional ASICs," said Stephen Metzger, director
of Hardware Engineering at Nauticus Networks. "In a standard Gate
Array or Standard Cell device, you must simulate to completion before
fabricating the device, and many times you can't tell when the design
is solid enough to go to fab, while the Xilinx FPGAs can be changed anytime
throughout the development cycle. We selected Xilinx over competing solutions
based on the overall cost advantages over a traditional ASIC, ultimate
design flexibility, and the very impressive logic and block RAM resources
provided by the Virtex-II Platform FPGAs."
Nauticus Networks uses multiple XC2V6000 Virtex-II FPGAs to implement
a processing engine for delivering network and security application services
to the data center. There is also an innovative TPC/IP termination engine
with advanced functions layered on top of the terminated traffic flows
that is made possible with the reprogrammable nature of Xilinx FPGAs,
providing unprecedented support in the field.
The Nauticus Intelligent Data Center Switches are used to replace multiple
data center network infrastructure systems developed by multiple system
vendors. By providing a scalable platform that delivers functions such
as layer 4-7 application switching, SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) application
services, TCP termination, and attack protection, network systems managers
benefit from a customizable, cost effective system from a single vendor.
"Nauticus Network's unique architecture underscores the important
role of high-performance FPGAs in the creation of next generation equipment
for the data center network infrastructure," said Sandeep Vij, vice
president of worldwide marketing at Xilinx. "Nauticus has developed
a cost effective scalable solution to meet the demands of today's economic
environment."
The Xilinx Virtex-II Platform FPGA series delivers the highest performance
and highest density of any programmable logic solution available today.
The innovative Virtex-II IP-Immersion architecture enables integration
of both hard and soft intellectual property (IP), enhanced system memory,
and lightning-fast DSP performance, providing the best platform for advanced
digital designs in the industry. With densities ranging from 40,000 to
eight million-system gates, Virtex-II solutions are empowered by advanced
design tools that reduce development time through fast design entry, powerful
synthesis, smart implementation algorithms, and efficient verification
capabilities.
