DESIGN AUTOMATION CONFERENCE, Anaheim, Calif., June 13, 2005 - Synplicity Inc. (Nasdaq: SYNP), a leading supplier of software for the design and verification of semiconductors, and Xilinx, Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX) announce optimizations to Synplicity's industry-leading Synplify Pro® software that enable designers to efficiently implement DSP functions into Xilinx Virtex-4 FPGA devices. For example, FIR filters can be inferred and implemented to operate at 500MHz using Synplify Pro. Through its knowledge of the Virtex-4 device architecture, the Synplify Pro software allows users to take advantage of the many different operating modes of the device family's DSP48 blocks by automatically implementing the XtremeDSP structures as selected by the designer and exclusive capability to cascade multiple DSP blocks.

"Designers can achieve optimal DSP implementations using Synplify Pro 8.1 software," said Jerry Banks, director of business development and strategic DSP alliances at Xilinx. "The latest optimizations are the result of our strong ongoing partnership with Synplicity. Through our relationship, Synplicity has been provided with unique knowledge of our devices in order to deliver synthesis tools that allow our mutual customers to realize the best results possible."

With the Synplify Pro software, many commonly used DSP functions are inferred directly from the designer's HDL code and implemented directly in Virtex-4 DSP48 blocks through seamless integration with Xilinx ISE logic design tools. Examples are multiply-accumulate and multipliers with operands that are a constant. In these cases the Synplify Pro software infers this behavior from the RTL code and creates an efficient implementation in the DSP48 block. The Synplify Pro software can also implement adders with three or more operands and automatically balance delay between registers within the DSP48 blocks to improve overall timing performance. In addition, the software enables designers to take their single HDL source and quickly retarget different FPGAs from Xilinx. A comprehensive application note on using Virtex-4 DSP48 blocks with Synplify Pro can be found at http://www.synplicity.com/literature/pdf/dsp48.pdf.

"The Virtex-4 family of multi-platform FPGAs continue to expand the types of applications being implemented in programmable logic and we're thrilled to provide outstanding quality of results to designers implementing DSPs into their Virtex-4 FPGAs," stated Jeff Garrison, director of marketing for FPGA products at Synplicity. "In addition to our new automated DSP features, Synplicity's timing-driven synthesis technology supports the Virtex-4 devices with unmatched reductions in area and cost, providing customers with the broad range of benefits that they've come to expect from Synplicity."
