XILINX SELECTED AS FPGA SUPPLIER OF CHOICE
FOR BAE SYSTEMS AEROSPACE AND DEFENSE PRODUCTS
BAE Systems to use Xilinx solutions extensively
across aerospace and defense
product portfolio and programs
SAN JOSE, Calif., March 14, 2005, Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX),
the world's leading programmable logic supplier, and BAE Systems,
a leading aerospace and defense supplier in Europe and North America,
today announced that BAE Systems has chosen Xilinx as its FPGA (field
programmable gate array) supplier of choice. As a result, BAE Systems
will use Xilinx devices, intellectual property, and software design
tools throughout their aerospace and defense product portfolio.
Xilinx was chosen by BAE Systems because of their leading portfolio
of targeted solutions for the aerospace and defense market, quality
certification, and support. The selection process was conducted
over a period of 18 months and facilitated by a BAE Systems committee
comprised of representatives from major BAE Systems facilities throughout
Europe and North America. The multi-million dollar deal provides
BAE Systems with preferred pricing, access to future roadmaps and
input into the product definition of future Xilinx devices.
"BAE Systems has selected Xilinx as our FPGA supplier of choice
based upon their wide range of unparalleled product offerings that
support our unique and diverse needs," said Bob Stow, BAE Systems'
senior vice president of Engineering and Technology.
"Our agreement with BAE Systems reflects our continued commitment
to providing our customers with a complete solution through use
of our silicon, IP, design tools and design services. Customer input
is key to satisfying future product requirements and BAE Systems'
collaboration on future product definition will prove invaluable,"
said Mustafa Veziroglu, general manager of the Market-Specific Products
Division at Xilinx.
As one of the world's leading aerospace and defense contractors,
BAE Systems is involved in some of the industry's most advanced
technologies, including commercial aviation, electronic and information-based
systems, unmanned air vehicles (UAVs), battle field robotics, and
leading edge communications technology for both military and civil
environments. Xilinx programmable devices, including the newest
Virtex-4 multi platform FPGAs and Spartan-3 cost optimized FPGAs,
play a key role in many BAE Systems applications based on their
ability to be reprogrammed "on-the-fly".
"On-the-Fly" Technology Enables Remote Repair and Upgrades
Today's major transformational aerospace and defense programs require
the advanced features, high performance and flexibility of the Xilinx
programmable architecture. Xilinx is the only FPGA provider to offer
reprogrammable radiation-tolerant devices with embedded processing
capabilities, enabling BAE Systems to change or upgrade their product
features and functions "on-the-fly" -- adapting to new
environments by reconfiguring the hardware to address their specific
application needs.
This "on-the-fly" technology, known as Internet Reconfigurable
Logic can be achieved even after the product has been deployed,
allowing repairs and upgrades from a remote location. This technology
is a key enabler for BAE Systems to use Xilinx devices in systems
deployed in space, enabling BAE the tremendous flexibility to make
changes to their extraterrestrial systems. The flexibility of Xilinx
devices is also a key element in BAE System's battlefield communication
programs such as the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) to support
secure radio communication across frequency bands.
