FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

XILINX RADICALLY IMPROVES EMBEDDED DESIGN PRODUCTIVITY WITH LATEST EMBEDDED DEVELOPMENT KIT V6.1i
Automatic generation of complex implementation details, new simulation capabilities, and new IP cores, enable the creation of a custom, bootable embedded system in minutes

SAN JOSE, Calif., and BOSTON, Mass., September 15, 2003 At the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) today, Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX) announced version 6.1i of its Embedded Development Kit with new capabilities that enable the creation of a custom computing platform based on IBM PowerPC™ in Virtex-II Pro FPGAs or MicroBlaze™ in Virtex and Spartan series FPGAs, with just a few clicks of the mouse. The tool also provides support for the automatic creation of a matching board support package with all required software drivers. Initial support for the board support packages includes Wind River Systems vxWorks™ for PowerPC based embedded designs and the Xilinx Microkernel for MicroBlaze or PowerPC based designs.

EDK version 6.1i demonstrations are available in booth #409 at the Embedded Systems Conference September 16-17, 2003. Or visit www.xilinx.com/processor for more information on Xilinx EDK and MicroBlaze solutions.

"The acceptance rate of our processor products such as MicroBlaze, PicoBlaze and the hard embedded IBM PowerPC core in Virtex-II Pro continue to ramp at an astonishing rate," said Per Holmberg, director of Programmable Systems Marketing at Xilinx. "With the new features in EDK v6.1i, designers will benefit greatly from decreased design time and development costs. What traditionally took weeks to months can now be accomplished within minutes."

Unrivaled Ease-of-Use
The new EDK version 6.1i provides unique hardware design capabilities. Using EDK designers can select a target processor core and FPGA architecture, and choose from an extensive list of peripherals to generate a complete custom processing system. Connection details and a default memory map are generated automatically, resulting in a functional hardware design that is ready to be downloaded into a target board. Initially supporting vxWorks from Wind River Systems and the Xilinx Microkernel included in the EDK, the automatic generation of a ready-to-use board support package provides unrivaled ease of use and tremendous savings in time and effort that is normally associated with this task.

Growing Peripheral IP Catalog
New Cores available with EDK v6.1 include a CoreConnect™ Processor Local Bus (PLB) 10/100 Ethernet MAC, a multi-channel (up to 256) HDLC controller and a Digital Clock Manager (DCM) module for multi-clock, multi-frequency designs. Customers can now choose from over a hundred peripheral IP core offerings from Xilinx and its partners to develop their embedded applications.

New Features in Embedded Design Tools
Integration with the recently announced Xilinx ISE 6.1i Project Navigator offers a more seamless and intuitive development environment. New capabilities provide designers with a programmable platform to deliver high-performance embedded systems with the least amount of manual intervention and a shorter development cycle.

EDK version 6.1i also includes an IBM PowerPC Instruction Set Simulator to enable debug of software code on the development workstation. Hardware simulation has been enhanced to allow mixed VHDL-Verilog simulation as well as the ability to toggle between RTL, structural and full timing-based simulation.

Embedded Processor Course and Programmable World Workshops
Customers can learn how to effectively develop, debug, and simulate an embedded system using the newest EDK 6.1i features by attending the Xilinx Embedded Systems Development course. For complete program and registration information on this two-day course, visit www.support.xilinx.com/support/education-home.htm

Xilinx Programmable World Workshops are also scheduled throughout Fall 2003 with locations throughout the world. Visit www.xilinx.com/pw2003/workshop for complete program and registration information.

Pricing and Availability

The Embedded Development Kit is immediately available for order placement with promotional pricing at $495 and includes the MicroBlaze soft processor core. EDK version 6.1i is expected to begin shipping in October 2003.
