QNX ENABLES EASIER END PRODUCT DIFFERENTIATION
FOR HIGH RELIABILITY APPLICATIONS USING XILINX VIRTEX-II PRO FPGAS
QNX Neutrino support for Xilinx Virtex-II Pro embedded PowerPC
offers end-product feature flexibility by combining dynamically
upgradable OS with programmable hardware platforms
SAN JOSE and OTTAWA, November 18, 2003 - QNX Software Systems today
announced support for Xilinx (NASDAQ:XLNX) Virtex-II Pro Platform
FPGAs through its port of the QNX® Neutrino® RTOS. QNX and
Xilinx have worked together to produce a hardware-software solution
that enables QNX developers to deploy robust applications on high-performance
Virtex II Pro FPGAs for the automotive, telecom, and networking
industries. Designers of Platform FPGA and system-on-a-chip applications
can now cut development costs, reduce IC device count, and significantly
boost the field upgradability of their complete system.
System architects using the QNX Neutrino RTOS and Virtex-II Pro
Platform FPGAs are now able to create updateable systems for both
software and hardware. As a result, an existing Virtex-II Pro FPGA
design can be reconfigured for specific requirements or custom applications
in response to a changing market environment. Moreover, it can be
enhanced with new capabilities even after deployment in the field.
"Greater product differentiation and faster time-to-market
are key drivers for automotive manufacturers today," said Dr.
Erich Geiger, CTO of Harman International. "The combined power
and flexibility of the QNX Neutrino RTOS and Xilinx Virtex-II Pro
embedded PowerPC will help us attain both goals."
The Xilinx Virtex-II Pro family is the world's first and only FPGA
to offer integrated IBM PowerPC® embedded technology and 3.125
Gbps serial transceivers. Virtex-II Pro devices include these multiple
PowerPC CPUs and multi-gigabit serial transceivers at no additional
charge, providing unequaled capability and value for today's system
design requirements.
The QNX Neutrino RTOS is a fault-resilient, massively scalable RTOS
based on a true microkernel architecture. Its unique modular nature
allows developers to add or replace applications, drivers, protocol
stacks, and OS services "on the fly," without rebooting.
Together, these capabilities have made QNX Neutrino a premier OS
for network elements, in-car telematics units, and a host of other
mission-critical, high-uptime applications.
"By working closely with Xilinx, we are helping our customers
build reconfigurable, 'future ready' systems that can address the
demand for unanticipated services or applications down the road
- a critical requirement in automotive and networking markets,"
said Linda Campbell, director, strategic alliances, QNX Software
Systems.
"We are pleased to add QNX to our AllianceEmbedded program,"
said Jerry Banks, director of Global Alliances at Xilinx. "The
QNX Neutrino RTOS offers features that are targeted specifically
for the automotive, telecommunications, and industrial markets and
takes advantage of the power and flexibility of our Virtex-II Pro
family of FPGAs."
QNX Support for Xilinx Evaluation Platform
As part of the collaboration between Xilinx and QNX, the QNX Momentics
development suite will support the Virtex-II Pro ML300 Evaluation
Platform, which allows designers to evaluate and experiment with
features of the Virtex-II Pro FPGA. For further details, contact
your local QNX sales or customer service representative.
