XILINX LOW-POWER COOLRUNNER CPLDs NOMINATED
BY EDN MAGAZINEAS FINALIST FOR
"GREATEST INNOVATION OF THE PAST 15 YEARS" AWARD
Xilinx Recognized As Innovator and Pioneer in
Low Power Technology
SAN JOSE, Calif., January 20, 2005 - Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX)
today announced their selection from a field of hundreds as a finalist
for this year's EDN Innovator/Innovation Awards. Instituted in 1990,
the Innovation Awards honor the people, products and technologies
that have shaped the semiconductor industry. EDN's editorial panel
chooses nominees for the "Greatest Innovation of the Past 15
Years." Online voting link is http://www.edn.com/innovationballot.asp.
"As the saying goes, many are called, but few are chosen. Our
technical editors have done outstanding work on the difficult task
of identifying the finalists. The differences in the products EDN
covers are often subtle and tricky to flush out," said John
Dodge, editor in chief, EDN Magazine. "Congratulations to all
the finalists on a job well done."
"We are honored to be nominated for this award," said
Patrick Little, vice president and general manager, CPLD division
at Xilinx. "We are ecstatic about the acceptance and strong
market adoption of the CoolRunner-II CPLDs in the marketplace. This
rapid market adoption has been a key driver in allowing us to aggressively
increase our CPLD market segment share."
Xilinx estimates that, in the third quarter of calendar year 2004,
its share of the CPLD market segment increased to more than 25 percent,
up from 20 percent the prior year, and up from approximately 10
percent five years ago.
By replacing the sense amplifiers used in traditional CPLDs with
pure CMOS logic, the CoolRunner CPLDs dramatically reduced power
consumption - by as much as a factor of 1,000 - compared to traditional
CPLDs. Since the acquisition of the CoolRunner CPLD technology from
Philips Semiconductor in 1999, Xilinx has continued to pioneer industry
leading CPLD capabilities and features. Introduced in 2002, the
CoolRunner-II RealDigital CPLDs were the first CPLD product family
to achieve ultra low power consumption while simultaneously delivering
the high performance and advanced features required by designers
- a perfect match for traditional communications and data processing,
as well as the emerging high volume consumer electronics and automotive
markets.
