FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AT 1 MILLION GATES FOR UNDER $12* XILINX 90NM
SPARTAN-3 DEVICES
ARE THE WORLD'S LOWEST PRICED FPGAS
Company delivers 50 thousand system gates for $2.95
SAN JOSE, Calif., October 6, 2003 - Xilinx, Inc. (Nasdaq:XLNX)
today announced breakthrough price points for its low cost Spartan-3
family. Xilinx attributes its low cost leadership position to its
on track, successful implementation of 90nm process technology.
Xilinx first shipped the 90nm Spartan-3 family in March 2003, enabling
the company to be the first to pass on the cost-density benefits
of the 90nm node customers. Xilinx is now offering Spartan-3 FPGAs
with 1 million system gates for under $12.00* and three different
Spartan-3 FPGAs for under $6.50*.
"In today's economic climate, low-cost solutions are 'a must'
for customers moving to programmable logic as an alternative to
the high cost of developing ASICs or Structured ASICs," said
Rich Sevcik, senior vice president and general manager for the FPGA
Product Group at Xilinx. "Through our successful implementation
of advanced process technology, Xilinx is taking full advantage
of the low cost structures made possible at the 90nm/300mm node
and passing those cost benefits on to customers."
Spartan-3: Offers World's Lowest Cost per I/O (CPI) and Cost per
Logic Cell (CPL)
Ranging from 50K to 5M system gates, Spartan-3 utilizes an innovative
architecture to drive down costs. For example, Xilinx offers the
industry lowest cost per I/O through a dual ring of staggered I/O
pads. By maximizing I/Os on the reduced size Spartan-3 die, Xilinx
is delivering up to 40% better CPI advantage than competing solutions.
Additionally, Xilinx offers the FPGA industry's lowest cost per
logic cell. By aggressively driving to 90nm, Xilinx has packed more
logic cells onto smaller 90nm devices resulting in up to 36% CPL
advantage over competing solutions.
The Spartan-3 platform is the world's lowest cost FPGA with unrivaled
price points. Starting at under $2.95*, the Spartan-3 family addresses
customer demand for low cost solutions. By continuing to set new
price-density standards for the FPGA industry, Xilinx has dramatically
narrowed the price-performance gap between programmable and fixed
logic. This has driven Spartan-3 device adoption further into higher
volume applications and hastened the decline of ASIC designs. Xilinx
is now shipping four members in the Spartan-3 FPGA family (see
related release). Xilinx is on track to ship the entire Spartan-3
family in full volume production in early 2004.
Providing Customers with More Features for Less Cost
With an architecture optimized for 90nm technology, Spartan-3 FPGAs
offer more density and features in its class to allow customers
to reduce overall system costs through integration. Spartan-3 FPGAs
offer a combination of highest embedded block and distributed RAM
and up to 784 I/Os. Spartan-3 devices offer embedded XtremeDSP functionality
with dedicated 18x18 multipliers and up to 330 billion multiply
and accumulates (MACs) per second. Additionally, Spartan-3 devices
support 23 leading parallel I/O, including PCI 32/33 and PCI 64/33,
as well as other popular parallel connectivity cores for telecommunications
and networking.
Rapid Industry Adoption of 90nm Spartan-3 FPGAs
With five times more design-win opportunities than any previous
Xilinx product family at this point in its lifecycle, the Spartan-3
family is enjoying unprecedented customer adoption. Already, the
Spartan Series is the world's most successful low-cost FPGA family
in its class with over 11,000 customers worldwide. Since the introduction
of the Spartan Series in 1998, the company has shipped more than
60 million devices. According to recent public statements, Xilinx's
nearest competitor has confirmed that Xilinx is over 12 months ahead
in delivering 90nm and 300mm technology, giving Xilinx a formidable
technology lead and maintaining its position as the world leader
in low cost solutions.
Pricing and Availability
The 3S50, 3S200, and 3S400 Spartan-3 devices with 50,000, 200,000,
and 400,000 system gates respectively, are available for less than
$6.50*. The 3S1000 Spartan-3 device with 1 million system gates
is also available for under $12.00*. The entire Spartan-3 family
will be available in volume production in early 2004 from distributors
worldwide, or direct from Xilinx at www.xilinx.com/spartan/.
