FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
XILINX VIRTEX SERIES REACHES ONE BILLION DOLLARS
IN CUMULATIVE REVENUE, IN RECORD TIME
Strategic partnering with UMC delivers world's
most successful and fastest ramping FPGA series
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 13, 2002-Xilinx, Inc., (NASDAQ:XLNX) and
UMC (NYSE: UMC) today announced that the Xilinx VirtexTM
FPGAs series, which is almost entirely built in UMC's fabs, has
reached one billion dollars in cumulative revenue since its introduction
to the market in 1998. The milestone marks the first product series
from a programmable logic company to reach the billion-dollar mark
in less than five years. The most advanced products within this
series, the Virtex-IITM FPGAs,
are built at UMC's 300mm Fab 12A on the company's 130 nm (0.13 micron)
eight layer copper/low-k process.
Rich Sevcik, senior vice president of FPGA products at Xilinx said,
"We are extremely pleased with the excellent die yields and competitive
cost structure that UMC continues to deliver. On top of that, UMC's
ability to meet our increasing volume requirements as demand for
our products rises is an essential part of our success. We are looking
forward to working with UMC on future developments particularly
as we migrate to smaller process generations such as 90 nanometer
and beyond."
"Xilinx is an excellent technology partner for UMC, as well as
a winning customer," said Fu Tai Liou, chief officer of worldwide
marketing and sales at UMC. Due to the FPGA vendor's high-volume
requirements, we have migrated a large percentage of the company's
production to 300 mm wafers. As the Virtex series chips feature
larger die-sizes, Xilinx is able to realize the maximum cost benefits
of manufacturing products on the larger wafers. We are pleased our
efforts helped Xilinx reach this important milestone."
About the Virtex series
The Virtex FPGA product line currently includes four device families
derived from the original Virtex family: the Virtex-E family, the
award-winning Virtex-II Platform FPGA family, the Virtex-II EasyPathTM
FPGAs, and the Virtex-II ProTM family of Platform FPGAs. This progression
solves a wide variety of today's high-performance, robust feature
set applications, such as optical networks, gigabit routers, wireless
cellular base stations, modem arrays, and video broadcast systems.
Capable of handling designs from 40,000 up to eight million system
gates, the Virtex-II series features the highest performance, widest
density range, highest density, and block RAM of any programmable
solution available, with features Digital Clock Management (DCM)
and XCITETM technology for improved signal integrity. The Virtex-II
Pro family immerses as many as four IBM PowerPC processor cores
and up to sixteen 3.125 Gbps Rocket I/O transceivers into the Virtex-II
FPGA fabric. The Xilinx Integrated Solutions Environment (ISE) offers
the most complete software environment for FPGA development and,
to support the PowerPC immersion, Xilinx and Wind River Systems
have the most complete embedded tools solution to design in the
Virtex-II Pro FPGAs. Designers can now take advantage of pre-engineered
solutions for embedded, DSP, and connectivity applications with
200 different cores that support the Virtex-II and Virtex-II Pro
series.
