XILINX ISSUES WHITE PAPER SHOWING 73% LOWER STATIC POWER IN VIRTEX-4 COMPARED TO COMPETING FPGAS

Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX) today released a technology white paper describing 73 percent lower static power consumption in its Virtex-4 multli-platform FPGA family as compared to competing 90nm FPGAs. The paper describes how Xilinx delivers significantly reduced leakage current and static power at the 90nm-process node through the industry's first triple oxide technology. Xilinx used its experience from shipping millions of 90nm devices to develop the Virtex-4 family's award-winning architecture delivering 1 to 5 Watts lower total power consumption per FPGA.

In addition to thin-oxide and small, fast, transistors for the FPGA core, and thick-oxide, higher voltage-swing transistors for the I/O, Xilinx introduced a third middle-thickness for the oxide transistors in Virtex-4 FPGAs, which can be used for configuration memory cells and interconnect pass transistors.

Device static power consumption is a primary issue in the semiconductor industry - as process technologies get smaller and faster. At the 90nm node, transistors normally draw more leakage current, putting power concerns and performance at odds. This is critical at realistic operating junction temperatures of 85oC where uncontrolled leakage current can consume several Watts in standby power. By reducing static power in Virtex-4 FPGAs, Xilinx provides guaranteed lower power consumption regardless of design utilization or clock frequency.

Thermal operating environment for popular high-performance FPGA end-markets in networking, telecom, storage, and wireless routinely have junction temperatures at 85 °C or higher. At these temperatures, the Xilinx Virtex-4 FPGAs deliver up to 73 percent lower static power, which leaves sufficient design margins for the dynamic components of power consumption in FPGAs. Therefore, Virtex-4 FPGAs enable designers to meet aggressive performance goals without breaking their power budgets. To download the white paper visit www.xilinx.com/virtex4/lowpower.
