XILINX DONATES US$330K TO PRESTIGIOUS
FUDAN UNIVERSITY IN CHINA
SHANGHAI, CHINA, July 27, 2004 - Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX),
the world's leading supplier of programmable chips, today announced
a donation valued at US$330K to the Fudan University School of Microelectronics.
A full complement of the Xilinx programmable logic solutions - including
design software, silicon and reference boards - will be incorporated
into course curriculum and workshops focused on advanced digital
electronic design.
The Xilinx University Program (XUP) donation will be used to equip
a new Fudan-Xilinx lab with more than 50 workstations. The XUP contribution
includes multiple seats of logic and embedded design software [ISE
Foundation Software, Embedded Development Kit (EDK)], digital signal
processing (DSP) software (System Generator for DSP) and in-circuit
logic analysis tools (ChipScope Pro Logic Analyzer). Xilinx is also
donating multi-media boards and demonstration boards equipped with
Spartan II field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices and CoolRunner
II complex programmable logic devices (CPLDs).
"We're delighted to extend our long-time relationship with
such a prestigious academic institution as Fudan University,"
said Vincent Tong, Vice President of Product Technology at Xilinx.
"We hope to make a significant contribution to the future of
electronic design in China's rapidly expanding high technology industry
by providing professors and students with hands-on experience with
leading edge programmable logic silicon and tools. Our work with
Fudan is especially gratifying for key Xilinx engineers who are
graduates of Fudan University and now able to give back to their
alma mater through active participation in our university program."
"We're honored to receive this generous donation from Xilinx,"
added Professor Zhou Dian, Dean of Fudan School of Microelectronics.
"As one of the top microelectronics engineering schools in
China, the Fudan faculty recognize the critical importance of FPGAs
as a key enabling technology for the future - and an important area
of emphasis for our students. The addition of a Fudan-Xilinx Lab
to our program, along with technical support and professor training,
will significantly enhance our FPGA curriculum."
Just this month, Xilinx conducted a complementary Professor's Workshop
at Fudan University for more than 50 attendees from 19 Chinese schools.
A variety of workshops are available to professors worldwide as
part of the XUP program, among them Digital Design with FPGAs, DSP
in FPGAs and Embedded Systems.
"Our collaboration with Xilinx has brought Fudan a new concept
for engineering teaching and experimentation," said Professor
Hong Zhiliang of the Fudan School of Microelectronics and Head of
the Fudan-Xilinx Lab. "The flexibility and programmability
of the technology make it ideal for developing and verifying integrated
circuits in an FPGA. We're currently preparing a lecture material
regarding FPGAs and DSP and look forward to some interesting experimentation
using Xilinx boards and development tools."
Patrick Lysaght, Xilinx Senior Director with worldwide responsibility
for XUP, added, "Our collaboration with Fudan University is
an outstanding example of our commitment at Xilinx to partnering
with the academic community throughout the Asia Pacific region.
In the past year, XUP has made donations of state-of-the-art CAD
tools and FPGA prototyping systems to academic institutions in more
than a dozen Asian countries in support their research and teaching
programs. We're looking forward to collaborating with even more
institutions in the future."
About Fudan University
Fudan University, founded in 1905 in Shanghai, is one of the leading
universities in China, with a long history and an international
reputation for academic excellence. The university is under the
direct jurisdiction of the State Ministry of Education, formerly
known as the State Education Commission, and composed of 17 schools
offering a complete range of majors and disciplines. Fudan University's
faculty consists of young pioneering researchers and famous senior
scholars of significant achievements. The 2,100 faculty members
of Fudan University includes over l,300 professors and associate
professors, of which 24 have been admitted as members of the Chinese
Academy of Sciences or members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Nearly 600 professors are currently involved in doctoral advisement.
About Xilinx University Program
The Xilinx University Program was established in 1985 to promote
education and research using Xilinx Programmable Logic Device (PLD)
technologies. Xilinx is the most widely used PLD vendor in the academic
market, providing support for more than 1,700 universities worldwide.
Through XUP donations, students and professors have access to the
world's most advanced programmable logic solutions (software, silicon,
IP cores, development systems, reference boards), training material,
technical support and programs (design contests, conference participation).
