Virtex-II configuration - What prevents the keys for bitstream encryption from being read out?

Description

In Project Navigator, under the properties for "Creating Programming File", I can choose to enable readback, even when I am creating an encrypted bitstream.

If I attempt to program a device using an encrypted bitstream with the verify option selected, iMPACT reports "Programming Failed" when the verify operation fails.

What is preventing the keys from being read out from the device?

Solution

Although this option is present in the Project Navigator GUI, it is not utilized. When the GUI tools create an encrypted bitstream, readback is disabled.

The keys cannot be read out of the device when it has been programmed with an encrypted bitstream.

The verify option should not be selected when a device is programmed with an encrypted bitstream.
