Solution

Known Issues
The Rx Elastic Buffer used in the 1000BASE-X PCS v3.0 core with the TBI interface contains a weakness that results in unreliable operation of auto-negotiation.
- To work around this issue, install the patch below and regenerate the core. For more information, refer to (Xilinx Answer 17615).

A problem in the 1000BASE-X PCS/PMA v3.0 core (TBI or PHY versions) might cause a conflict with auto-negotiation. When the fiber optic cable is pulled out of the receiver, the transmitter continues to transmit data even though it should shut down after 10-20 ms.
- To work around this issue, install the patch below and regenerate the core. Alternatively, you can avoid this problem by ensuring that bit "0.9" (auto-negotiation restart) is always written to "0" whenever bit "0.12" is set to "0" (auto-negotiation = disabled). For more information, refer to (Xilinx Answer 17631).

For certain CORE Generator modules, user-specified component names exceeding 24 characters in length might cause CORE Generator to hang.
- To work around this issue, limit user-specified component names for CORE Generator cores to 24 or fewer characters. In addition, limit the path to the project to 12 characters. For more information, see (Xilinx Answer 17164).

Patch Installation
To resolve the issues listed in (Xilinx Answer 17615) and (Xilinx Answer 17631), apply the following patch to the 5.2i IP Update #4 installation:

http://www.xilinx.com/txpatches/pub/swhelp/ip_updates/1000basex_5x_ip_update4_patch_14july03.zip
http://www.xilinx.com/txpatches/pub/swhelp/ip_updates/1000basex_5x_ip_update4_patch_14july03.tar.gz

To install the patch, perform the following:
1. Unzip the contents of the ZIP file or "tar.gz" archive to the root directory of the Xilinx installation. Select the option to allow the extractor to overwrite all the existing files and maintain the directory structure pre-defined in the archive.

PC
You can determine the Xilinx installation directory by typing the following at the command prompt:
"echo %XILINX%"

UNIX
You can determine the Xilinx installation directory by typing the following:
"echo $XILINX"

NOTE: You might need to have system administrator privileges to install the patch.

2. After installing the patch, regenerate the Gigabit Ethernet MAC core from the CORE Generator. The core produced will contain the fix.
