How do I detect the JTAG chain on the Xtreme DSP Development Kit when using iMPACT?

Solution

You can use one of the following four procedures to detect the JTAG chain on the XtremeDSP Development Kit.

NOTE: This Answer Record does not apply to the XtremeDSP Kit-II, XtremeDSP Kit-II Pro, or XtremeDSP Kit-IV.

NOTE: For firmware upgrades, Xilinx recommends using Procedure 1.

Procedure 1 - BenONE without BenADDA fitted: PCI
1. Connect the JTAG cable to J13*. See pin-out below.
2. Plug the BenONE board into the PCI slot.
3. Turn on the PC containing the BenONE board.
4. Launch iMPACT and initialize the chain. You will see three devices: XC95144XL, XC18V02, and XC18V02.

Procedure 2 - BenONE without BenADDA fitted: USB
1. Apply external power to the BenONE board.
2. Connect the JTAG cable to J13*. See pin-out below.
3. Launch iMPACT and initialize the chain. You will see three devices: XC95144XL, XC18V02, and XC18V02.

Procedure 3 - BenONE with BenADDA fitted: PCI
1. Connect the JTAG cable to J13*. See pin-out below.
2. Plug the BenONE board into the PCI slot.
3. Turn on the PC containing the BenONE board.
4. Launch the FUSE software and open card.
5. Launch iMPACT and initialize the chain. You will see five devices: XC95144XL, XC18V02, XC18V02, XC2V2000, and XC2V80.

NOTE: The XC2V2000 might be a XC2V3000 on some boards.

Procedure 4 - BenONE with BenADDA fitted: USB
1. Apply power to the BenONE board.
2. Connect the JTAG cable to J13*. See pin-out below.
3. Connect the USB cable to the BenONE board.
4. Launch the FUSE software and open card.
5. Launch iMPACT and initialize the chain. You will see five devices: XC95144XL, XC18V02, XC18V02, XC2V2000, and XC2V80.

NOTE: The XC2V2000 might be a XC2V3000 on some boards.

*Depending on the kit you are using, this jumper might be different. J13 is correct for the original XtremeDSP kit with an XC2V3000 on it. Refer to the kit documentation for the correct jumper.
