AR# 20862 7.1i ISE - "FATAL ERROR: Unable to open log file __projnav/<process_name>.err in write mode" on UNIX platform

Keyword: vhdtdtfi, v2tfi, vhd2spl, permission, Linux, Solaris

Urgency: Standard

General Description:
After a new project is created on a UNIX platform machine, every process that I attempt errors out with a message stating that the ".err" file could not be opened for writing in the "__projnav" directory.

For example, when I try to create a schematic symbol from a VHDL file, the following error message occurs:
"FATAL ERROR: Unable to open log file __projnav/vhd2spl.err in write mode."

When I try to "View HDL instantiation Template" for a source file, the following error message occurs:
"FATAL ERROR: Unable to open log file __projnav/v2tfi.err in write mode.
XIL_MEMUSAGE - process used 1048576 bytes of memory
ERROR: vhdtdtfi failed
Process "View HDL Instantiation Template" did not complete."

How can I work around this problem?

In some cases, the sub directory "__projnav" is not created in the design project directory on UNIX platforms.

The "__projnav" directory is used by Project Navigator to write error message files, log files, and other process related files (such as options files), for a given process. When the "__projnav" directory is not present, the ".err" files cannot be created, and this causes the FATAL ERROR message.

To work around this problem, manually create the "__projnav" sub directory in the project directory.

This problem has been fixed in the latest 7.1i Service Pack, available at:
http://support.xilinx.com/support/techsup/sw_updates
The first service pack containing the fix is 7.1i Service Pack 1.
