XtremeDSP Development Kit-II - How do I update the Xtreme DSP Development Kit-II firmware USB or PCI PROMs for the Spartan-II interface FPGA?

Description

How do I update the Xtreme DSP Development Kit-II firmware USB or PCI PROMs for the Spartan-II interface FPGA?

Solution

This is for the XtremeDSP Development Kit-II.

To update the firmware for the XtremeDSP Development Kit, please see (Xilinx Answer 17595).

Firmware Update Utility

First, attempt to use the Firmware Update Utility provided with the XtremeDSP Kit-II Software install. Please see the Users Guide, Part XI: Board Firmware (Page 213 of Issue 4).

If you successfully update the Firmware, you are finished, and there is not need to proceed.

If you cannot use the Firmware Update Utility, then proceed to the Manual Firmware Update instructions.

Manual Firmware Update

You must download the updated firmware files from the following location:

http://www.xilinx.com/txpatches/pub/utilities/3rdparty/xtreme_dsp_kit-ii_firmware.zip

Please read the entire procedure before attempting to update the Firmware.

Preparing the BenONE without BenADDA fitted: PCI

1. Remove the BenADDA module from the BenONE motherboard.

2. Place Jumper across 2 pins of J18.

3. Connect to the BenONE via header J19 using a Xilinx Parallel IV cable (see diagram below).

4. Plug the BenONE board into the PCI slot.

5. Turn on the PC containing the BenONE board.

6. Launch iMPACT and initialize the chain. You will see three devices: XC95144XL, XC18V02, and XC18V02.

If you are seeing the XC2V80, you have not removed the BenADDA board; please return to Step 1.

7. Right-click the 1800 PROMs and select 'read signature/ usercode back' and note the value.

You are now ready to begin updating the Firmware:

Programming the BenONE without BenADDA fitted: PCI

1. Right-click the middle device, an 1800 PROM, and assign either the USB PROM or the 3V PCI bitstream, depending on which you need.

Make sure that the usercode readback and the options "Erase before Programming" and "Verify" are checked.

The Board does not support both 3V PCI and USB at the same time. You can reprogram this PROM at any time to change from USB to 3V PCI support.

2. Right-click the right-most of the 3 devices, which is also an 1800 PROM, and assign the 5V PCI bitstream.

Make sure that the usercode readback and the options "Erase before Programming" and "Verify" are checked.

NOTE: It is very important that the CPLD device is re-programmed LAST.

3. Erase the contents of the CPLD, making sure the "Overwrite Write Protect" option is checked.

4. Re-program the CPLD with the ".jed" (JEDEC) file, making sure that the options "Erase before Programming", "Verify", "Read protect" and "Write protect" are all checked.

Power cycle the card and try to open the XtremeDSP Development Kit-II card using the FUSE software. You should be able to detect the card and open it. If this fails, please contact Xilinx Technical Support:
