7.1i Spartan-IIE MAP - Why is Timing Driven Packing not supported in 7.1i for Virtex architectures?

General Description:

When I specify that timing driven packing be used during MAP in 7.1i for a Spartan-IIE device, I receive the following warning:

"WARNING:Map:117 - The -timing switch is not supported for this architecture, and will be ignored."

Why is this feature no longer supported for this architecture?

The timing driven packing algorithm for the older Virtex architectures (Virtex, Virtex-E, Spartan-II and Spartan-IIE) used a different timing driven packing algorithm than that used by newer architectures. During the development of the 7.1i release, the decision was made to phase this algorithm out for technical reasons. A significant amount of work would have been necessary to continue with this functionality in 7.1i. Customers that want to continue using this feature should use the 6.3i or earlier versions.

It has been noted that MAP usage messages still specify the -timing option as an available option. A CR has been logged to have this changed.
