AR# 23387 8.2i ISE - Project Navigator crashes when closing one project and trying to open another: "Fatal Error: GuiUtilities:Gq_Application.c:570:1.12.10.2"

I open my project in Project Navigator and all processes are functioning as expected. When I open a different project, Project Navigator issues the following error:

"Fatal Error: GuiUtilities:Gq_Application.c:570:1.12.10.2 - This application has discovered an exceptional condition from which it cannot recover. Process will terminate. To resolve this error, please consult the Answers Database and other online recourses at http://support.xilinx.com. If you need further assistance, please open a WebCase by clicking on the "WebCase" link at http://support.xilinx.com."

When I start ISE from the command line, the following error message occurs:

"Unable to find myself in the CWD or the Path and I was not invoked with a full path ise."

The second project is not corrupt; I can start Project Navigator again and the project opens successfully.

Solution

This issue is linked to the way Project Navigator is opened. This error occurs if the current working directory (CWD) when ISE is launched is the location of the ISE executable. This condition occurs as follows:
- when you "cd" to the %XILINX%\bin\nt (bin\sol on Solaris, or bin\lin on Linux) and launch Project Navigator by entering "ise<ENTER>"
- invoke ISE by double-clicking the executable name in Windows Explorer or other file management GUI
- the "Start In" property of a Windows shortcut for ISE is set to %XILINX%\bin\nt

This problem has been fixed in the latest 8.2i Service Pack available at:
http://www.xilinx.com/xlnx/xil_sw_updates_home.jsp
The first service pack containing the fix is 8.2i Service Pack 1.
