Project Navigator - Custom Text Editor selection is not used to open a process report

Description

The Project Navigator preferences (Edit -> Preferences) under ISE General has a category called Editor, the category description indicates "Set the editors to use with ISE." However, after setting the Editor type to [Custom], process report files are still opened with the ISE editor. Other files, such as HDL files and user documents are opened correctly with the selected editor.

Solution

In ISE 8.1i and later, process reports are opened with a Project Navigator-specific Report Browser. Neither the ISE Text Editor or user-selected editors are used for viewing reports. Text-based source files (such as Verilog, VHDL, UCF, and EDIF) and user documents can still be opened using the selected editor.

To open a report in a specific text editor, first open the editor, then use the File -> Open option available in the editor.
