9.1i ChipScope Pro - Cannot create Java VM

Description

ChipScope displays the following message upon launch:

"Can't create Java VM."

Solution

This issue happens on some systems due to a memory conflict between certain keyboard/mouse software utilities such as IME, altIME and Chu Chu Mouse. ChipScope Analyzer versions 8.2i sp4, 9.1i and 9.1i sp1 are more likely to have this problem than are other ChipScope Analyzer versions.

Solution 1 - Replace "analyzer.exe" file.

This solution works only for versions 8.2i sp4, 9.1i and 9.1i sp1. Follow these instructions to download a new version of "analyzer.exe" that will fix this problem:

1. Go to the directory "C:\Xilinx\ChipScope_Pro_9_1i\bin\nt\", or for version 8.2 sp4, go to directory "C:\Xilinx\ChipScope_Pro_8_2i\bin\nt\".

2. Rename the old file "analyzer.exe" to "analyzer.save."

2. Download the new version of file "analyzer.exe" from:

<http://www.xilinx.com/txpatches/pub/applications/misc/ar23816.zip>
3. Copy the new "analyzer.exe" to directory "C:\Xilinx\ChipScope_Pro_9_1i\bin\nt\", or for version 8.2 sp4, go to directory "C:\Xilinx\ChipScope_Pro_8_2i\bin\nt\".

Solution 2 - Edit Start Menu Shortcut:

1. In the Windows Start Menu, right-click the "ChipScope Pro 9.1i -> Xilinx ChipScope Pro Analyzer" menu item. (For 8.2i, right-click the "ChipScope Pro 8.2i -> Xilinx ChipScope Pro Analyzer" menu item.)

2. In the pop-up menu, click "Properties."

3. Choose the "Shortcut" tab.

4. In the "Target" text field, add the following arguments after "analyzer.exe":

NOTE: There is no space after "-J."

-J-Xmx512m

The "Target" text field appears similar to the following:

C:\Xilinx\ChipScope_Pro_9_1i\bin\nt\analyzer.exe -J-Xmx512m

or for 8.2i

C:\Xilinx\ChipScope_Pro_8_2i\bin\nt\analyzer.exe -J-Xmx512m

5. Click "Apply" and "OK."

6. Start the ChipScope Analyzer from the Start menu.

If this does not help, try smaller option values. Instead of -J-Xmx512m try values -J-Xmx384m or -J-Xmx256m.

Solution 3 - Use Command Line Option

If you run the Analyzer from the command line, enter the following in a command prompt window:

C:\Xilinx\ChipScope_Pro_9_1i\bin\nt\analyzer.exe -J-Xmx512m

or for version 8.2i:

C:\Xilinx\ChipScope_Pro_8_2i\bin\nt\analyzer.exe -J-Xmx512m

If this does not help, try smaller option values. Instead of -J-Xmx512m, try values -J-Xmx384m or -J-Xmx256m.

Solution 4 - Remove Conflicting Keyboard/Mouse Software Utility

If the system has a keyboard/mouse software utility such as IME, altIME and Chu Chu Mouse, try to remove or disable that utility.

ChipScope Inserter

This problem can also occur with the ChipScope Inserter executable (version 9.1i, no service pack). You can work around this issue by installing ChipScope 9.1 sp1.
