AR# 23981 8.2i Virtex-4 PAR - Crash in Phase 8.8

My design crashes during PAR at Phase 8.8. What is Phase 8.8, and how can this crash be avoided?

Phase 8.8 is a general placement phase responsible for the overall placement results. It cannot be bypassed. It might be possible to avoid a Phase 8.8 failure by doing anything that affects general placement. Using a different placement cost table (-t switch) or floorplanning the design are two examples that might affect this issue.

NOTE: This Answer Record is only a potential match for cases where Virtex-4 designs fail during PAR Phase 8.8 prior to version 8.2.3i. There are other possible reasons for similar failures.

This problem has been fixed in the latest 8.2i Service Pack available at:

The first service pack containing the fix is 8.2i Service Pack 3.
