9.1i ISE - Implementing a design in Project Navigator on a Windows XP64 platform causes _pn.exe to close

Keywords: implement, support, OS, platform, processor, multi, crash, error, stability

I create and implement a 9.1i ISE project successfully on a Windows 32-bit or Linux platform. However, when implementing the same project on Windows XP64, I discover that Project Navigator closes down.

Unexpected project failures or Project Navigator crashing on Windows XP64 might be due to how the "_pn.exe" executable is being handled on a multi-processor machine.

To test if the processor used effects the execution of Project Navigator (_pn.exe), use the Window's Task Manager to set the process (_pn.exe) affinity (which processor the process can run on) to a single processor.

The XIL_PROJNAV_PROCESSOR_AFFINITY_MASK variable controls the processor(s) on which Project Navigator will run.

The advantage of using this variable over setting the affinity in Task Manager is that with the Task manager, the affinity would need to be set for each run of the Project Navigator.

For more information on setting this variables, please see (Xilinx Answer 24394).

The use of this variable has been added to the latest 9.1i service pack available at:
The first service pack containing this feature is 9.1i Service Pack 2.
