9.2i Install - "Value too large for defined data type" when trying to uncompress and untar ISE 9.1i web image on Solaris

Keywords: gnu, zip, large, compile, sol, 9.1i

After downloading the ISE 9.1i DVD image from the Xilinx website I am unable to unzip or untar it on Solaris and receive the following message:

"gzip/gunzip/tar: Value too large for defined data type"

The gzip applications provided with Solaris 8 cannot uncompress files larger than 2GB.

To get around the gzip issue, use gzip 1.3.x or higher, which can be downloaded from here:

Similarly, the tar application cannot untar files larger than 2GB. To get around the tar issue, you can use gtar rather than tar.
