9.1i ISE - An IP core source file (.xco) cannot be added to an ISE project if it resides in the project directory

Description

Keywords: coregen, Core Generator, add source, local, copy, Project Navigator

If an IP core is located in the ISE project directory and I try to add it to the project using Project -> Add Source ..., the following message is displayed in the Adding Source Files window.

"CORE Generator cores cannot be added using Add Source ... use Add Copy of Source ... instead."

Then, if I try to add the IP core to the project using Project -> Add Copy of Source ..., the following message occurs in the Adding Source Files window.

"Source file all ready in project directory. It wasn't necessary to copy the file.
Core Generator cores can not be added using Add Source ... use Add Copy of Source ... instead."

Solution

IP cores, including netlist(s) and support files, must reside in the project directory in order to be successfully simulated, synthesized, and implemented in a design. A check was placed in ISE 9.1i to prevent users from adding IP cores in remote directories using the "Add Source ..." process. However, the check did not correctly verify whether the core was in a remote directory.

This problem is scheduled to be corrected in ISE 9.2i. Until then, in order to add the core to a project, you must move the core to a directory other than the project directory and then add it to the project using Project - > Add Copy of Source.
