10.1 ISE - Virtex-5 and Spartan-3A Xilinx schematic macros are shown as "?" in Project Navigator source hierarchy

The Schematic Editor includes a library of symbols for each Xilinx device family. Each component in the library is either a primitive or a macro (defined by smaller components). For the Virtex-5, Spartan-3A, and Spartan-3AN device families, any macro that is placed on a schematic appears in the Sources hierarchy as a question mark (?). If the project device family is changed to an older family (for example, Spartan-3E or Spartan-3), the hierarchy does not show the Xilinx macros.

This is only a visual problem and is applicable to any family that uses the new HXILINX macros (Virtex-5, Spartan-3A, and Spartan-3AN).

The macros of the Virtex-5 and Spartan-3A families have a LEVEL attribute of HXILINX indicating that the logic associated with the symbol is implemented as HDL. This change was made for newer families to ensure that the functionality of the component could be implemented in the most efficient way as synthesis tools are continually enhanced.

Even though the Sources hierarchy shows a question mark for these symbols, the design can be successfully simulated and implemented.

This issue has been fixed in ISE 11.1.
