DSP Reed Solomon Decoder v6.1 - Why does ERR_CNT stay zero when FAIL and ERR_FOUND go High?

Description

Keywords: ERR_CNT, FAIL

Why does ERR_CNT stay zero when FAIL and ERR_FOUND outputs go High?

Solution

The ERR_CNT status output on the Reed-Solomon Decoder is an error count which indicates how many errors there are.

If the number of errors is greater than the error correcting capability of the decoder, FAIL goes active High. The assertion of this signal means the ERR_CNT value should be ignored.

Therefore, when FAIL is asserted, the ERR_CNT output should be ignored.
