11.1 ISE - Project Navigator uses excess memory on schematic design files - "ERROR:Portability:3 - This Xilinx application has run out of memory..."

Description

In ISE 11.1, opening, saving, and compiling schematic source files take a more time and memory than expected.

With large schematics the computer might run out of available memory and issue the following error:

"ERROR:Portability:3 - This Xilinx application has run out of memory or has encountered a memory conflict. Current memory usage is 2083006 kb. You can try increasing your system's physical or virtual memory."

Solution

In ISE 11.1 schematic files are written to a new XML-based format. The new format will be used when creating a new schematic file or when saving an existing schematic. An issue has been found in the schematic reader code where CR-LF characters are being handled in an inefficient way.

A patch for this issue is available at:

http://www.xilinx.com/txpatches/pub/swhelp/ise11_updates/ar32786_projnav_11.zip

The patch is applicable to ISE 11.1 on Windows 32-bit, Windows 64-bit, Linux 32-bit, and Linux 64-bit platforms.

COMPATIBILITY:

This Tactical Update is compatible with ISE 11.1 and will no longer be needed as of ISE 11.2.

INSTALLATION:

Please extract to the root of your ISE 11.1 installation directory (for example, C:\Xilinx\11.1\ISE).

The "AR32786_ProjNav_11.zip" file contains four files (one for each supported OS):

lib/nt/libSed_Drawing4.dll

lib/nt64/libSed_Drawing4.dll

lib/lin/libSed_Drawing4.so

lib/lin64/libSed_Drawing4.so

Original files in the respective directories should be moved or renamed before you copy the archived files to these locations.

NOTE: Only the file for the operating system being used is required.
