AR# 33159 13.x Licensing - "_xlcm.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Description

When I open up Xilinx License Configuration Manager (XLCM) from the ISE design suite program group or by selecting Help -> Manage Licenses... from Project Navigator, the program crashes with the following message:

"_xlcm.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Similarly, running XINFO results in: "Exception Processing Message c000000013 Parameters ..." followed by: "_xinfo.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Why is this happening and how can I get around this error?

Solution

  • In ISE 11.2 Xilinx License Configuration Manager there was a DLL conflict that would cause an exception on certain Windows machines.

The crash only happens when you try to open up the license manager with the -manage option.

This issue was fixed in ISE Design Suite 11.3.

To work around the issue, open up a DOS prompt window and type in XLCM. Once the license manager opens up, you can click on the Manage tab to manage your licenses.

  • In ISE Design Suite 12.x and 13.x, it has been discovered that certain invalid license files found in the search path can cause XLCM license check to give an exception. For example, the license below will cause this error. Notice that the license does not contain an Increment or Feature line and the Package name is "null." This issue was fixed in ISEDS 14.1.

If you run "lmutil lmdiag -c <license File>" with the invalid file as the "file name" the command does not error but correctly returns without showing any valid features.
