iMPACT, Spartan-6 - Why do my MODE pins and HSWAPEN pin appear as "111" when I "Read Device Status" in iMPACT?

When you carry out a "Read Device Status" in iMPACT on a configured Spartan-6 device, the Mode pin and HSWAPEN pin values appear as "111" or another unexpected value. Before configuration, the Mode pin values correctly reflect those on the board. Why is this the case?

MODE status bits [10:9] of the STAT_register is monitoring the actual M1, M0, and HSWAPEN pins on the device. The MODE pins are dual purpose. When the part configures, if they are not used in the design, they are pulled up internally as unused I/O. The STAT register monitors this, hence the MODE pins and HSWAPEN show up as "111". Alternately, they can reflect the value on these pins used in your design.
