10.1/11.x COMPXLIB-the modelsim.ini file under ModelSim install directory is not updated

Description

After the simulation libraries for ModelSim are compiled, the modelsim.ini file under the ModelSim installation directory is not updated, even if it is not Read-only.

Why does this occur?

Solution

COMPXLIB updates the modelsim.ini file in the following way.

ISE 10.1 and before

  • When first installed, the <ModelSim install directory>/modelsim.ini file is protected as a Read-only file.
If it is Read-only, a modelsim.ini file will be created under the directory where you run the COMPXLIB command.
If you run the GUI tool "Simulation Library Compilation Wizard" from "Start menu -> All Programs", the modelsim.ini file is created under ISE installation directory (for example C:\Xilinx\10.1\ISE)

  • You can change the Read-only attribute of the <ModelSim install directory>/modelsim.ini file to make it editable.
If it is not Read-only, it will be updated directly.
    To change the Read-only attribute:
    • Right click on the <ModelSim install directory>/modelsim.ini file and choose "Properties"
    • Uncheck "Read-only"

We recommend that you keep a copy of the modelsim.ini file before you make it not Read-only.

ISE 11.x

  • In ISE 11.x, even if you make the modelsim.ini file not Read-only it will not be updated directly.
A modelsim.ini file is always created under the directory where you run the COMPXLIB command.
If you run the GUI tool "Simulation Library Compilation Wizard" from "Start menu -> All Programs", the modelsim.ini file is created under the ISE installation directory (for example C:\Xilinx\11.1\ISE)

To use the new created modelsim.ini file for simulation

  • Put the new created modelsim.ini in the project directory or use the MODEL_TECH environment variable to specify its location.
  • Use the newly created modelsim.ini file to update the <ModelSim install directory>/modelsim.ini manually.
    • ISE 10.1: Copy the contents between [Library] and [vcom] in the <ModelSim install directory>/modelsim.ini file to the same position in the new created file.
Then replace the <ModelSim install directory>/modelsim.ini with the newly created one.
    • ISE 11.x: Replace the <ModelSim install directory>/modelsim.ini with the new created one without any modification.
