(UG116) - Interpreting SEU data

The SEU data for Xilinx devices is given in (UG116), the Device Reliability Report.
 
What does the unit FIT/Mb refer to?

Solution


The SEU data in (UG116) is expressed in FIT/Mb. 

'Mb' in this case refers to 1,000,000 bits.

'FIT' stands for Failure in Time, with the timer period being 10^9 hours.
 
Therefore FIT/Mb refers to the amount of failures in 10^9 hours of testing, per 1,000,000 bits.

The actual SEU FIT rate of a design running in a Xilinx FPGA is far lower than what is predicted by direct calculation from the numbers in (UG116). 

This is because most FPGA routing resources are unused within any particular implementation.

SEU FIT/Mb error rates have a 90% confidence interval.
