AR# 38711 PlanAhead - ERROR: [HD-UCFReader 32] Could not create I/O port for name with wildcard characters my_bus[*]', constraint ignored

Description

I see the following errors when creating an I/O planning project with wildcard references:

ERROR: [HD-UCFReader 32] Could not create IO port for name with wildcard characters 'my_bus[*]', constraint ignored. (file = top.ucf, line = 50)

Solution

For an I/O planning project, PlanAhead tool cannot expand a wildcard character because it does not have a design to compare the text to. Because PlanAhead software does not support wildcard characters in UCF, an error will be issued rather than passing the wildcard character as defined.

To work around the issue with PlanAhead tool, place wildcard nets after the I/O port creation.

  • If you are using Project Navigator or command line implementation, simply edit the UCF file after I/O port creation with PlanAhead tool.
  • If you are using the PlanAhead project manager for implementation, you can pass a separate UCF file to ngdbuild using the -uc switch in the "More Options" field.
