AR# 39545 12.4 Timing Analysis - ISE 12.4 software does not support Spartan-6 -3 speed grade Engineering Sample (ES) devices

The ISE 12.4 software contains production speed files for the Spartan-6 devices. The Spartan-6 -3 speed files increased in performance in 12.4, which means the new speed files do not match the Engineering Sample (ES) silicon.

Any designs targeting -3 ES silicon must follow the instructions below. Also, the SP605 evaluation board contains -3 speed grade devices. The initial production of these boards contained ES parts. Customers using the SP605 should visually inspect the part marking; if it contains an "ES", then follow the instructions below.

If a design is targeting Spartan-6 -3 speed grade with ES silicon, the following options are available:
  • If a design is targeting -3 ES silicon, the recommended flow is to continue using ISE 12.3 software (or earlier if required).
  • If ISE 12.4 software is required, you must download the following tactical speed file patch for the ISE 12.4. This patch is only to be used with ISE 12.4 software, it is not required for earlier versions of the software and is not supported for any later versions:

    Installation for Windows/Linux:

    1. Download the tactical speed file patch: http://www.xilinx.com/txpatches/pub/swhelp/ise12_updates/ar39545_cr585469_spartan6_spd_dash3_ces_m81d_12_4_all.zip

    2. Make a backup copy of the SPD and DST files in the <XILINX Directory>spartan6/data directory.

    3. Unzip the ZIP file to a temp patch directory (C:\temp) and copy the new SPD and DST files from the temp patch directory to the <XILINX Directory>spartan6/data directory.

    3a. If you need the non-CES speed files, you need to copy the back SPD and DST files into the <XILINX Directory>spartan6/data directory

    Advanced Installation for Linux:

    1. Download the tactical speed file patch: http://www.xilinx.com/txpatches/pub/swhelp/ise12_updates/ar39545_cr585469_spartan6_spd_dash3_ces_m81d_12_4_all.zip

    2. Unzip the ZIP file to a local patch directory (i.e., /home/smith/my_xilinx_S6_CES_patch).

    3. Set MYXILINX environment variable to the patch directory (setenv MYXILINX /home/smith/my_xilinx_S6_CES_patch/).

    3a. If you need the non-CES speed files, you need to unset the MYXILINX environment variable.

    Verification of Installation of speed file:

    Running speedprint or trce on your design reports the Speed File Version number.

    Example: speedprint 6slx45t -s -3

    Speed file Version:

    12.3 -> 1.12

    12.4 -> 1.15

    12.4 CES Patch -> 1.13b
