AR# 41380: 12.X/13.1 Virtex-5 - When using a PMCD the following error is seen: ERROR:PhysDesignRules:2405
12.X/13.1 Virtex-5 - When using a PMCD the following error is seen: ERROR:PhysDesignRules:2405
When implementing a design in ISE 12.X/13.1, I receive the following error:
ERROR:PhysDesignRules:2405 - The calculated frequency value, 1000.000000, of the CLKIN1_PERIOD attribute on the PLL_ADV(PMCD) instance PMCD_1 is outside the allowed range of 1.000000 - 645.000000 MHz. Please change the CLKIN1_PERIOD attribute value in order to be within the allowed range for this device. ERROR:Pack:1642 - Errors in physical DRC.
The reason for this error is that when a PMCD is used in a Virtex-5 design the tools automatically re-target the PMCD to a PLL.
Because the PMCD does not have a CLKIN_PERIOD attribute the default value of 1 nS is used.
This results in the tools assuming that the PLL is being run at 1Ghz which is outside the specifications.
This problem is fixed in ISE Design Suite 13.2.
ISE 12.x can still be used as this was only a warning and not an error in those versions.
