What is a "forged" lid? What is a "hat" lid?

What is a "forged" lid? What is a "hat" lid? Does Xilinx offer options between a forged lid and a hat lid?

A forged lid is a special type of lid, also known as a "rugged" lid package that is used in the Aerospace and Defense market. Rugged means that it is constructed in such a way that it is resistant to shock. The stamped lid is also referred to as a "hat" lid. As per the diagrams below, the lid sits over the substrate as a completely flat surface. You can see the difference in the diagram between the forged (rugged) lid and the stamped (hat) lid.

Xilinx offers both options for certain device package combinations. When the option is available, the package drawing documents the details. As an example, please see: http://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/package_specs/ff1759.pdf.
