13.3 XST - ERROR:HDLCompiler:1832 - "<*>.v" Line <*>: Negative shift distance

Description

XST produces the following messages in cases when a negative shift distance is computed:

"ERROR:HDLCompiler:1832 - "<*>.v" Line <*>: Negative shift distance
INFO - You can change the severity of this error message to warning using switch -change_error_to_warning "HDLCompiler:1832"

Solution

Take the following piece of code as an example:

module top(input in, output out);
    parameter p1 = 3;
    parameter p2 = 6;
    assign out = in << (p1 - p2);
endmodule

In the above piece of code, (p1 - p2) equals -3 and this triggers the Verific XST (version 13.3) to generate the following error message:

"ERROR:HDLCompiler:1832 - "top.v" Line 4: Negative shift distance
INFO - You can change the severity of this error message to warning using switch -change_error_to_warning "HDLCompiler:1832""
