2014.1 Install - How to continue a partial/failed install

After beginning an installation of Vivado 2014.1, the installation fails. (for example if power to the machine is lost or the install terminates or crashes unexpectedly).

I would like to continue the installation to the same location but a message is received indicating that there is already a version of Vivado installed at this location.

How can I continue the install without having to wait for the files to download again?

There have been cases where the installer terminates or crashes unexpectedly on both Linux and Windows.

In most cases the issue is intermittent and re-running the installer will be enough to complete the installation.

Here is what to do to re-use the archives that were already downloaded and re-run the installation.

  1. Remove the files that were installed in the first installation, but keep the directory where the archives were downloaded.  For instance remove the directory C:\Xilinx\Vivado\2014.1 and its content, but make sure to keep the directory C:\Xilinx\.xinstall\payload\2014.1 intact.
  2. Re-launch the installer, provide the user ID and password and specify the same destination directory as in the previous attempt. (if you use a different one, the installer will not find the files that have already downloaded).
  3. Start the installation. The download step will run, but the installer will only re-download the files that are not in the destination directory.
  4. Complete the installation as normal.
