2014.2 Vivado IP Flows - IP Integrator design fails to upgrade - ERROR: [Coretcl 2-1043] upgrade_ip failed for 'k7bb1k' A current version of the IP 'xilinx.com:ip:axi_10g_ethernet:1.2'

Description

I am unable to migrate my project containing a block design from Vivado 2014.1 to Vivado 2014.2 because of issues with the 10G AXI Ethernet Core.

When trying to open the Vivado 2014.1 project in vivado 2014.2, I get errors similar to the following:

ERROR: [Coretcl 2-1043] upgrade_ip failed for 'k7bb1k' A current version of the IP 'xilinx.com:ip:axi_10g_ethernet:1.2' cannot be found in the IP repository.

ERROR: [Common 17-39] 'upgrade_ip' failed due to earlier errors.

The IP exists in the IP Catalog and can be instantiated.

Solution

This problem exists because the AppCore upgrade mechanism for IP cores is not searching for IP that can only be instantiated through IP integrator.

To work around this problem, do the following:

  1. Open the block design containing this IP.
  2. Run upgrade_bd_cell on the block diagram cell in the Tcl console.

See (Xilinx Answer 61041) for a patch that will fix this issue.

The patch allows the AXI 10G Ethernet v2.0 (a hierarchical IP, not an AppCore) to upgrade because the upgrade no longer insists that the upgrade target of an AppCore is another AppCore.

Specifically, the patch allows the upgrade of AppCore IP within the upgrade_ip Tcl command in the following ways:

  • Making the upgrade of block diagrams context-sensitive for IPI-only cores
  • Allowing AppCores to upgrade to non-AppCores (for example Hierarchical IP)
