Vivado IP Flows - I am seeing blackboxes for my IPs after adding them using read_ip or add_files on the XCI file, why does this occur?

I am using the non-project flow and I have generated my IPs in Vivado 2013.2.

When upgrading my design to 2014.2 and using "read_ip" or "add_files" on the IPs XCI files, the DCP files are not added to the project and as a result I get black boxes for the IPs.

If I add the DCP files using "add_files" then there is no issue.

Why does this occur?

This has been seen when migrating project from older versions of Vivado, for example from 2012.x and 2013.x to versions 2014.x.

It appears the generated IP from the older versions do not correctly tag the DCP file for "read_ip" or "add_files" to include it when adding it to Vivado projects and as a result it is ignored even though it is present.

The work-around is to use the "add_files" command directly on the DCP as opposed to the XCI file for the IP.

Alternatively Xilinx recommend that you update the IP cores to the latest version present in the Vivado release you are upgrading to.
This issue will then no longer occur as the "read_ip" and "add_files" command will correctly include the IP DCP files.
