Vivado HLS 2014: How to open simulation WDB files generated by XSIM from the VHLS GUI?

When using Vivado HLS 2014, the XSIM RTL/C cosimulation with trace enabled generates WDB files.
How can the WDB waveforms files be opened directly from the VHLS GUI without opening the Vivado GUI?

From the Windows OS you can create a script and associate the script with WDB files so double clicking on them will open them directly.

  1. Create a batch file called open_wdb.bat
  2. Add the lines below and save it:
REM open the wdb file generated by VHLS cosimulation  in Vivado
    set wdb=%~n1.wdb
    cd %~d1%~p1
    echo current_fileset > open_wdb_tmp.tcl
    echo open_wave_database %wdb% >> open_wdb_tmp.tcl
    C:\Xilinx\Vivado\2014.2\bin\vivado -source open_wdb_tmp.tcl
  3. make sure the hardcoded path above is correct, or just use "vivado" if your %PATH% variables are set up already.
  4.  Associate .wbd files to be opened with open_wdb.bat:
From Windows Explorer : right-click on WDB file > select "open with.." > browse to select this script.

  5. WDB files can now be opened from the VHLS GUI by double clicking on it.

A similar script can be written for any Linux environment.
