ModelSim XE (MXE) - starting the vsim GUI I get a window titled Error in Startup Script

Keywords: MXE, Xilinx Edition, MTI, error, NT4, syntax, error, expression

Urgency: standard

General Description:

I am running ModelSim XE on an NT4 machine with the latest patches.
When I try and startup 'vsim' I get a window that pops up with the title
"Error in Startup Script" containing some of the following:

syntax error in expression "$col>0.0"
("if" test expression)
while compiling

This may be related to an HP printer driver that may be
installed on your machine.

The workaround for this is to change the internationalization
setting in windows from "," (comma), to a "." (period) in order
to get MXE to run properly. You may have to reboot for these
setting to take affect.

The customer got the same error message as described.
He uses Windows XP and Modelsim MXE 5.6a.

The problem occurs if he changed the encoding style.
(e.g. Change from unicode to ascii. Modelsim Window View --> Encoding --> ascii)
Normally it should modify the encoding_system register to ascii.
To verify the value of the encoding_system register use regedit in a dos command shell.
Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Model Technology Incorporated is the
encoding_system register which should include the ascii string.

Under Windows XP it doesn't modify this encoding_system register with the
right value and the Startup script error occurs. The work around is to modify
this register with the right value manually.
