How do I obtain a license for ModelSim Xilinx Edition (MXE)?

Solution

1

Obtaining a License for the Full Version of MXE

For the Full Version, you must purchase a license through standard sales channels or by visiting the Xilinx Online Store:
http://support.xilinx.com/xlnx/xebiz/onlinestore.jsp

There are two ways to license the Full Version of MXE:

1. Dongle-based License
This license requires the placement of a dongle on the parallel port of the CPU. The dongle and the license file can be ported across to any machine running MXE, but can be used on only one machine at a time.

2. Ethernet License
This license is locked to the Ethernet card on the machine. A dongle is not required. However, this method is less portable.

During installation, you are asked to select the method that you want to use to license MXE.

NOTE: To obtain the correct license, you must select the method that you will be using to license MXE.

Toward the end of the installation, you are asked if you want to license the product over the Web. If you answer "Yes," a browser window containing the ModelSim XE license request page opens.

If you answer "No," you have the option of licensing the product at the ModelSim XE license site by selecting:

Start ->Programs ->ModelSim XE ->Submit License Request

With either of these Web-based methods, click the "Submit" button after filling out the form. The request is then processed by Xilinx, and a license is e-mailed to you after the normal processing time (usually 1-3 days). If you request a dongle license, the wait time might be longer because the dongle must be shipped out and received before the license is issued.

The license request page for the Full Version of MXE requires a serial number. For information about locating the serial number, see (Xilinx Answer 11551).

2

Obtaining a License for the Starter Version of MXE

Although MXE Starter is free, it still requires a license.

Toward the end of the installation, you are asked if you want to license the product over the Web. If you answer "Yes," a browser window containing the ModelSim XE license request page opens.

If you answer "No," you have the option to license the product at the ModelSim XE license site by selecting:

Start ->Programs ->ModelSim XE ->Submit License Request

The license is locked to the "C" drive disk ID. If you change the "C" drive disk ID or install MXE Starter on another machine, you must obtain a new license.

The license request page for the Starter Version of MXE does not require a serial number. If the license request page asks for a serial number, see (Xilinx Answer 17070).
