Using the ModelSim Simulator
Xilinx® ISE® software provides an integrated flow with the Model Technology ModelSim simulator, which allows you to run simulation from the Xilinx Project Navigator. The following sections cover how to install ModelSim, to set the path to the ModelSim simulator, and to set ModelSim as the simulator for your design.
Note If ModelSim is not correctly installed, the Configure ModelSim Simulator process appears in the Processes pane of the Design panel.
To Install ModelSim
The ModelSim simulator is available in the following editions:
  •  ModelSim XE - ModelSim Xilinx Edition III (MXE III) is the Xilinx version of ModelSim which is based on ModelSim PE. For more information about MXE III, see the ModelSim Xilinx Edition III Web page Web page available from the Xilinx website.
  •  ModelSim PE and ModelSim SE - ModelSim PE and ModelSim SE are the full versions of the ModelSim product that can be purchased directly from Model Technology. For more information on purchasing ModelSim PE or SE, go to the Model Technology website, http://www.model.com.
To Set the Path to ModelSim
  1.  Select Edit > Preferences.
  2.  In the Preferences dialog box, expand the ISE General category.
  3.  Click Integrated Tools.
  4.  In the Integrated Tools page, make sure the path in the Model Tech Simulator field is set correctly.
    You can click the browse button to search for the ModelSim executable, or type in the path and executable file in the field.
Note If you change the Model Tech Simulator path or executable, you must restart Project Navigator for the settings to take effect.
To Set ModelSim as the Simulator for the Design
You can set ModelSim as the simulator for your design using either of the following methods:
  •  Create a project using the New Project Wizard, and specify ModelSim in the Simulator field. Image
  •  To an existing project, change the Simulator field to ModelSim in the Design Properties dialog box. Image
