Configuring or Programming a Target Device
The Configure Target Device process uses the output from the Generate Programming File process, a BIT, JEDEC, or ISC file, to configure or program your target device. The target device can be any of the following:
  •  FPGA - The BIT and ISC files contain all of the configuration information from the NCD file, which defines the internal logic and interconnections of the device, plus device-specific information from other files associated with the target device. The binary data in the BIT or ISC file is downloaded to the FPGA memory cells.
  •  CPLD - The JEDEC and ISC files contain all of the necessary configuration information from the design database. The data from the JEDEC or ISC files is downloaded to the CPLD device.
  •  PROM or Flash configuration device - Used to configure FPGAs, the configuration information in the BIT or ISC file is used to create a PROM file. The data from the PROM file then programs the PROM or Flash device.
To Configure or Program a Target Device
  1.  In the Design panel, select Implementation from the Design View drop-down list. Image
  2.  In the Hierarchy pane, select the top module Image.
  3.  Optional.  In the Processes pane, right-click the Configure Target Device process, and select Process Properties to set properties for the process in the Configure Target Device Properties dialog box.
  4.  In the Processes pane, double-click Configure Target Device.
iMPACT opens, and one of the following occurs:
    •  If an IPF file is available and a target device is specified, the target device is configured.
    •  If an IPF file is available and a target device is not specified, you are prompted to open the iMPACT project corresponding to the IPF file, designate a target device in the configuration chain, and save the iMPACT Project File (IPF).
    •  If an IPF file is not available, you are prompted to open an iMPACT project, define a configuration chain, designate a target device, and save these settings in a new IPF file.
  5.  If necessary, double-click Configure Target Device to run the process again.
The Configure Target Device process runs iMPACT in the background to configure the target device, and the device is configured according to the settings in an IPF file saved from an iMPACT session.
