System integrators often need to bridge between disparate protocols or alter the video formats between equipment when building solutions for broadcast facilities or pulling together various A/V products for events. There often is a need to convert video formats to suit different media delivery platforms. Xilinx offers a broad portfolio of IP, reference designs and hardware to accelerate time-to-market with up/down/cross converters, video converters and video processing cards.

Up/down/cross converters specifically provide video processing and scaling, changing formats from SD/HD/4K in different color spaces and aspect ratios, integrated with various connectivity interface standards such as SDI to 12G-SDI and HDMI and DisplayPort. Converter boxes bridge between connectivity standards as the glue between devices and provide less emphasis on processing. Video processing cards encompass a large variety of algorithms but typically have multichannel video processing pipelines integrated with connectivity interfaces and often provide PCIe streaming DMA, to access host processing in production environments.

Xilinx and its partners offer a vast array of building blocks for all these functions, with multichannel 4K possible on Kintex®-7 FPGAs, Zynq®-7000 SoC and UltraScale+™ MPSoCs.

Xilinx solutions for routers and switchers support many channels of audio and video, enabling system designers to build ultra-dense solutions that save rack and floor space compared to legacy equipment. Delivering the highest quality, real time-video processing with minimal latency for applications such as live events is essential. Power consumption is also a key concern, especially in large-scale, multi-rack systems where thermal management is a factor for broadcasters.

Xilinx Zynq®-7000 SoCs and Kintex® UltraScale™ FPGAs enable broadcast router and switcher designers to create the highest quality real-time video processing systems with dense high-channel count switch matrices, meeting energy efficiency requirements. Xilinx solutions enable flexible and scalable system designs that meet a wide array of video algorithm and connectivity requirements, such as UHD-SDI and HDMI, addressing evolutions in the broadcast market.

Broadcast routers and switchers designed with Xilinx solutions can be configured and scaled in a variety of ways for different use cases, from simple 8 x 8 routers for a small regional affiliate with a 1 M/E deck, all the way up to 1152 x 1152 routers in major broadcast facilities with multiple 1 M/E through 4 M/E switcher decks.

As imaging resolutions and frame rates increase beyond HD and 60 frames per second, it is essential to perform real-time image and video processing within space-constrained designs of cameras and camcorders. In addition, new capabilities are required such as video analytics/metadata acquisition to enable efficient workflows and monetize content. The traditional solution is a mix of ASICs, processors, and FPGAs, which complicate the system and drive up power consumption and heat.

Kintex®-7 FPGAs, Zynq®-7000 SoCs and UltraScale+™ MPSoCs integrate high speed connectivity from the latest 4K2K and 8K4K sensors (via MIPI), providing differentiation with an all programmable image and video processing pipeline, along with lossless encoding capabilities where needed (typically for wireless transmission in ENG cameras, or for local storage on SD cards or SATA). This is all possible utilizing fewer devices, offering significant space, cost and power savings.
