The drive to higher video resolutions and faster frame rates is acute in the professional A/V industry. Applications such as interactive displays require a physically close and immersive experience, digital signage is a replacement for printed ads and has become representative of a brand’s quality, and LED video walls require very large pixel formats for improved viewing. This in turn is driving the need for faster real-time video processing capabilities, faster memory bandwidth, and faster connectivity interfaces in all types of equipment.

Video conferencing and telepresence systems are moving into converged products, which handle real-time analytics, video transport over local or wide area networks, and provide an immersive display experience. Image processing with 4K video, providing minimal latency needs to be balanced against efficient bandwidth utilization through compression to keep costs down without sacrificing quality. Providing a configurable system is also highly attractive with a variety of sensors and displays, supported through various connectivity protocols.

Xilinx offers a platform for complete integration at both end-points and multipoint control units (MCUs), enabling differentiation through novel video and image processing algorithms, developed around key infrastructure IP for MIPI, DisplayPort, HDMI and other video/imaging connectivity. This platform also enables integration of IP for wide dynamic range (WDR), analytics for speaker detection and tracking, and broadcast quality compression.

Xilinx 7-series, UltraScale™ FPGAs, and particularly the new UltraScale+ MPSoC with integrated features such as H.265/HEVC Video Codec and DisplayPort, are ideal for developing highly integrated video conferencing equipment with reduced cost, reduced power, and high performance.

Interactive displays are growing in popularity in classrooms and offices worldwide. The ability to collaborate and teach with traditional illustrations enriched with media content, and to easily share ideas in the digital domain, enhances productivity and communication. When using projectors and LCD touchscreens, the close proximity of the viewer to the screen makes interactive displays an application that is ideally suited to 4K and even 8K high resolution video.

A range of IP cores, reference designs and platforms enables interactive display manufacturers to integrate display connectivity from a variety of unknown inputs (Blu-ray players, PCs and other sources), which calls for robust receivers and HDCP capability, as well as V-by-One® HS output for driving the panel. Processing multiple channels of 4K can be achieved with low-end Kintex®-7 FPGAs, and additional embedded processing for interactivity is possible in the same device with on-board ARM® processors in Zynq®-7000 and UltraScale+™ MPSoC devices. The result is a highly integrated, but completely flexible solution which saves space, cost, power, and offers massive differentiation while speeding time to market.

Video walls and digital signage are aimed at providing eye-catching content so that retailers can advertise goods to consumers as they pass by. This can range from simple single-LCD information displays showing content from a PC over an Ethernet connection, to large format LED video walls for outdoor events and video poster-style advertising.

Xilinx FPGAs and SoCs are aimed at the mid-to-high end of this market segment, where many channels of video processing and connectivity are required to be integrated into single or few devices. The emphasis being on the transport of video content with the highest possible quality that represents the quality of the brand being shown, or where information needs to be shown in a large format but with very high resolution due to viewer proximity.

The embedded ARM processor subsystem in Zynq®-7000 SoCs and expanded capabilities of UltraScale+™ MPSoC enables LED/LCD wall manufacturers to include application software on the same device. This could include expanded features such as video analytics and human detection using on-board cameras via MIPI to capture traffic information, such as linger time, age, gender, and even emotional response of the potential buyer.
