Xilinx Smarter Solutions in the Data Center
New application architectures server virtualization and storage consolidation have transformed the data center. However, data center networks have lagged behind, resulting in costly, complex, and inefficient data centers. Many of the network interface standards and protocols are now changing rapidly with new ones being regularly introduced, all with the intent of addressing this lagging network performance. New network infrastructure architectures, including those based on Software Defined Networks (SDN), are regularly being explored and deployed. Hardware optimization is used to overcome critical bottlenecks when they arise. The rapid evolution of data-center networking equipment offers great opportunities for the deployment of high-speed processing systems based devices.
High-performance Port Extender reduces Data Center CapEx and OpEx rack by rack
The Xilinx Smarter Networks port extender (PEX) solution for data-center rack switching extends the reach of the existing sever networking devices by moving the switching function to underutilized core switches, which replaces the redundant TOR (top-of-rack) switches with a much simpler device: the PEX.
The Xilinx PEX solution can be configured to meet specific Data Center requirements because it is based on Generation-Ahead programmable technology; The Xilinx PEX Ethernet ports can be configured as 48 1GE, + (4) 10GE, or (48) 10GE + (4) 40GE.
PEX networking capabilities include:
- Packet Parsing
- Packet Editing
- DSCP Code remarking
- VLAN Add/Deletion
- VLAN – VXLAN mapping
- IP Checksum Recalculation
- Egress Multicast
- Optional Egress Buffers
- E-Tag Addition and Deletion
- 802.1BR compliant Links
The highly flexible Xilinx Port Extension solution allows for the removal of switches from the network resulting in significantly fewer acquired and managed switches. In addition, port extension extends the reach of the more capable higher layer switches to the edge of the network. This results in superior use of the capabilities and assets within the data center.
